Conrad Murray trial underway; Doctor charged in Michael Jackson's 2009 death

Opening statements began Tuesday (Sept. 27) in the Conrad Murray trial, the doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter for the 2009 death of pop superstar Michael Jackson.

Jackson died on June 25, 2009 from what the coroner said was an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol combined lorazepam and midazolam.

Murray's legal team is arguing that the pressure to prepare for a series of 50 concerts was too much for the singer. Murray's attorney Ed Chertoff has said previously, "We think that Michael Jackson was involved in certain acts that ended his own life. We think that he was desperate at the time that he did that."

Prosecutors are stating that Murray was reckless in prescribing propofol for Jackson.

The trial is expected to last four to six weeks. If convicted, Murray could land in prison for four years and lose his medical license.
