Should 'Sesame Street's' Bert and Ernie marry?

An online petition is calling for long-time "Sesame Street" characters and roommates Bert and Ernie to marry. According to a petition posted to Change.org, PBS should acknowledge the two Muppets as gay to teach "children and their parents that not only is it acceptable but also teach children that homophobia is wrong, bullying is wrong and that Sesame street [sic] should recognize that there are LGBT relationships, families, and include them in their show."
So far, the petition only has 403 signatures. An accompanying Facebook fan page for the campaign had 53 members as of this writing. It isn't clear who exactly authored the petition, but it has sparked some debate on Change.org with some expressing outrage at the idea of gay "Sesame Street" characters.
Others, though, fully endorse the idea:
"This could make a huge difference for children with parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer," wrote one commenter. "It would also help end bullying in schools. Finally it can help children who may be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer."
What do you think? Should Bert and Ernie come out of the closet or should "Sesame Street" -- if it does anything -- introduce new gay characters?

That would be a change in the positive direction, yes. They should get married.
Speaking as a gay man, I think this is pointless. They're not romantically linked. With this logic, Chandler and Joey should've gotten married, as should Bevis and Butthead or Ren and Stimpy.

Are you serious? That is the dumbest thing I'd ever heard. So you mean to tell me that bullying only happens to gay kids? Kids can be cruel and they will find another thing to tease one another about.
Besides the only Muppet couple I can think of is Miss Piggy and Kermit the frog. And I don't want to know about their sex life either. What am I saying -THEY'RE PUPPETS ON A TV SHOW FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!

NORMAL folks do not have this type of thoughts, I am pushing 50, been around the block several times, but, never, ever would have though of something as stupid and offensive as this. Liberal sick perverted ideas will only confuse good kids, let the little ***** in the making fend for themselves, after all they are deviants.

People , start reading your Bibles and see what it says about the sin, notice I said the sin of homosexuality not the people. God loves all his people, it is the sin and improper behavior He hates. I will not have my nephew exposed to such a thought, when The Book says it is wrong. My family and friends will no longer be watching this show if this takes place and I suggest it is time for God's People to start speaking up when it is agsinst what God has spoken. First, prayer out of schools, then the guns and drugs came in. Remember!
Also, I read the comment about the bullying. I think that sort of behavior should start from the home. When I was growning my sisters and never even dreamed of making fun of others, teasing, or bullying. because of the teachings we received at home. We always treated all with respect no matter how they looked ot the financial or home life was like. We need to get to the basics. We can't expect our teachers to raise our children at school.
