Rep. Gabrielle Gifford returns to House, announces re-election run
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made her first return to the U.S. House of Representatives Monday (Aug. 1) for the debt ceiling bill vote. Both sides of the aisle took several minutes to pause in their business and welcome her with a standing ovation and numerous hugs and handshakes.
Giffords was the victim of an assassination attempt at a rally in her home state of Arizona back in January. The shooting left six people dead and many wounded, including Giffords, who was shot in the head. The road to recovery has been long and challenging for Gabby, but it was great to see her back in Washington.
On Giffords' Twitter page, she wrote, "The #Capitol looks beautiful and I am honored to be at work tonight." and Norah O'Donnell of the "CBS Evening News" announced this morning on "The Early Show," "On the @theearlyshow this morning at 709 and 830a. @CBSNews breaking news Giffords running for re-election."
Glad to hear Giffords is feeling strong enough to run again.

It was great to see her back, but she looked a bit shaky in the footage from last night. If she's feeling up to running again that's fantastic - and certainly she'll become an icon to those with head and brain injuries and gunshot victims even more than she already is - but I just hope she isn't overdoing it. Her recovery should take precedent over elections.
If I lived in her district, I would vote for her without hesitation.
It was great to see her progress, but she is in no way capable of handling the duties of a Congresswoman. Of course, even with that head wound she would probably be more sensible than most of the morons on the Hill.
She has helped would-be challengers by announcing her intentions. Any opponent is going to have to handle their campaign very carefully. She is likely to get a sympathy vote. Anyone who attacks her record is likely to experience a voter backlash.
It will be possible to beat her, but the old bullseye and target talk will backfire on anyone dumb enough to use it.
Leave it to MSNBC's O'Donnell to get it wrong yet again. Gifford has made NO decision regarding the next election and has certainly NOT announced that she's running again. As bad as MSNBC is, don't they at least check their facts? Oh wait, it was Norah O'Donnell......now I understand.
Um...Norah O'Donnell doesn't work for MSNBC anymore, try CBS News.
Don't some people check their facts? Oh wait, it was Stoopit...now I understand.
The shooting did not take place at a rally, but at a meet-n-greet the citizenry outside on a streetcorner.
As sorry as I am for Ms. Giffords, I will not be voting for her again. I have been without representation in the House for over six months, despite legislation that said she should have been replaced after 90 days absence, and I'm angry about that. We've been kept relentlessly up-to-date on her progress, and I don't believe she's capable of doing the job *and* doing her rehab. We have too many critical issues to have a representative who's just going to rubber-stamp whatever her party tells her to because she's not able to do the job. I wish her all the good luck in the world in her recovery, and if she is able to recover to the point where she *can* do the job, I'll consider voting for her again. Until then, though, I'm voting for anyone but Gabby.
