Redmond O'Neal returns to rehab instead of jail

Redmond_ONeal_Booking_Photo_080211.jpgRedmond O'Neal, roubled son of Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett, was charged with felony gun and heroin possession -- the latest in a series of drug-related arrests. Instead of sending him back to prison, though, the judge recognized Redmond's need for further treatment.

He's been sentenced to one year of inpatient drug rehab and five years of probation by a Los Angeles court. "We are pleased and grateful that the judge gave Redmond further treatment rather than incarceration," his lawyers say in a statement to People. "His history of addiction warrants this approach."

Though O'Neal has been in trouble with the law before, his family has been particularly supportive of his need for help this time around. For the first time, his half-siblings and father were present in the courthouse. Sources say that sister Tatum O'Neal has made supporting Redmond's recovery a priority.
