'Planet of the Apes' rises to top Friday box office, 'Change Up' falters at #4

A strong Friday at the U.S. box office has franchise reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" easily poised to win the weekend after its $19 million haul dwarfed its closest competition.

"Apes," which stars James Franco, John Lithgow and a computer-rendered chimp played by  Andy Serkis, received solid praise from critics for its special effects.

Last week's nearly-tied champs, "The Smurfs" and "Cowboys & Aliens" have some more space between them this weekend, with the little blue guys taking in $5.7 million on Friday and the sci-fi western nabbing $4.6 million.

Easily a disappointment for the box office beleaguered Ryan Reynolds, the Green Lantern's "Freaky Friday"-esque buddy comedy with Jason Bateman, "The Change Up," only earned $4.6 million in its first night of release.

That's in stark contrast to the performance of most of this summer's R-rated comedies -- "The Hangover II," "Bridesmaids," "Horrible Bosses" -- which have been runaway hits.

Maybe people are sick of Ryan Reynolds?

Apes was Fantastic in every way. wasnt just a special effects movie but it had a script; which is rare these days. Worthy to be in the franchise.

The Change-Up didn't look like it would deliver any laughs or rather any big laughs from the trailers I've seen. Definitely a movie most movie buffs will either skip or catch in a month or so when it shows up in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart.
I'm curious to see if Apes will hold up or drop off like every other movie that has come out since Captain America. Nothing holds up well past one week anymore. It's hit big and die off or fail right out of the gate like, The Change-Up.
Cowboys & Aliens, Smurfs, and Friends With Benefits, are just a few examples of movies collapsing with quickness. If Captain America beats any of the new releases after being in theaters for more than 3 weeks now, it will be truly embarrassing for the newer releases.
