Jackie O tapes: Thought Lyndon Johnson had JFK killed, admitted William Holden affair [UPDATED]

jackie-o-gi.jpgScroll down for an update on this story, including ABC's denial that the tapes are as explosive as claimed by the Daily Mail.

Audio tapes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, on which she shares her theory that her husband's successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, was involved in the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy are set to be released in mid-September.

ABC will air excerpts from the tape in a special that doesn't yet have a firm date.

On the tapes, Jackie talks about her theory that Johnson, along with a group of Texas businessmen, was complicit in her husband's death. The tapes were, according to the Daily Mail, recorded with historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., within month's of JFK's death.

The former first lady, who died 17 years ago, also apparently reveals details of an affair with actor William Holden, which she claims was in retaliation for Kennedy's own extra-marital dalliances. Allegedly the tapes also contain Jackie's suspicion that Kennedy was having an affair with a 19-year-old White House intern.

While Jackie had specified that the tapes not be released for 50 years after her death, her daughter, Caroline Kennedy, has given the go ahead for an early release.

[UPDATE: According to the New York Post, ABC execs are basically calling the Daily Mail report about the new Jackie O. tapes "hogwash."

"The tabloid reports about content of the tapes are total nonsense," a rep tells the Post. "ABC isn't releasing any content from those tapes until mid-September, at which time it will be clear how off base these reports are."
