Bubba Smith, football legend and 'Police Academy' star, dead at 66

Charles "Bubba" Smith, the Super Bowl-winning defensive end who went on to successful acting career, was found dead Wednesday (Aug. 3) at his Los Angeles home. He was 66.

Smith spent his youth in Beaumont, Texas, and played football for his father Willie Ray Smith before going on to star at Michigan State. While at MSU, Smith rose to All-American status and played in the "The Game of the Century," the 1966 10-10 tie versus Notre Dame.

He was the first pick of the 1967 NFL draft and had a long and successful career playing for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers. He was selected to two Pro Bowls, was named first team All-Pro once and was part of the Super Bowl V-winning Baltimore Colts.

After the NFL, Smith began a second career as an actor. His early work included the famed Miller Lite commercial when he touted the easy opening cans only to rip the top clean off. Smith then went on to star in numerous TV and film projects, most notably as Moses Hightower in the "Police Academy" series.

Police believe the death to be of natural causes.
