'Apes' the dominant species at box office with $53 million, 'Change Up' heads to extinction
It's a bad weekend for humans.
Following a better-than-expected Friday, reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is assured a weekend box office win to the tune of an expected $53 million.
The James Franco-starring science (hopefully) fiction feature gained from its Friday haul, adding $19.8 million and giving it quite a bit of distance between its closest competition.
"The Smurfs" is proving to be the long-term winner in its tight opening weekend race with "Cowboys & Aliens." The family movie comes in at #2 this weekend with $21 million, topping the western which managed to pull in $16.8 million.
And then there's "The Change Up," the R-rated comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. Adding just $5.2 million on Saturday to its meager Friday gross, its expected to only earn $14 million over the course of the weekend.
The rest of the top 10 looks like the following...
5. "Captain America" - $13.5M
6. "Harry Potter" - $12.5M
7. "Crazy, Stupid, Love" - $12.3M
8. "Friends With Benefits" - $5M
9. "Horrible Bosses" - $4.8M
10. "Transformers 3" - $3.2M
