Kody Brown, husband on 'Sister Wives,' planning polygamy lawsuit

Kody Brown, his four wives and their 16 children have been under investigation since "coming out of the closet" as polygamists on TLC's reality show "Sister Wives." But now the Brown family plans to challenge the polygamy law under which they are being investigated, as they are expected to file a lawsuit Wednesday (July 13).The lawsuit will not be seeking that the U.S. recognize polygamous marriages. Instead, it will be challenging the law against polygamy as unconstitutional, citing the 2003 United States Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas, which ruled that laws against sodomy are unconstitutional invasions in to the intimate conduct of consenting adults. The Brown lawsuit will argue laws against polygamy are the same.
The lawsuit will ask that the federal courts mandate that states cannot punish polygamists for their private conduct so long as they are not breaking other laws, like laws regarding incest, child abuse or seeking multiple marriage licenses. Kody Brown is only legally married to Meri, his first wife. The other three women are "sister wives" and not legally married to Kody, though there are common-law marriage laws in Utah that are based around co-habitation. The Brown family has since moved to Nevada, where common-law marriages have not been recognized since 1943.
Brown says in a statement, "We only wish to live our private lives according to our beliefs."

Then they should have all thought about their privacy before they went on national, & cable tv telling everyone about their lives. Because of wanting to explain their life style to everyone, is the reason they no longer have any privacy. Shame on them
I wonder what Cody would think if one of his other "wives" wanted to bring another "husband" into the mix. My guess is he wouldn't be so for it then. The worst part of this whole thing is that all of these children have been brought up to think that this lifestyle is o.k.
If they didn't want this to be a problem then why make a show? I think they just wanted their 15 mins of fame and it turned around and bit them in the behind!
Let me start by saying that I am not a polygamist nor do I agree with the practice. That said, its not the "privacy" so much they are concerned with. Moreso, it is the inability of them not being able to publicly practice what they believe in.
Muslims/Mormons have the extra wives and kids on Welfare and OUR TAXES PAY for their lifestyle.
As long as we aren't supporting them with welfare, etc...and they abide by every other law, I don't see why they can't live the way they choose. The fact that Cody steps up to the plate and acknowleges his responsibilities, supports his family, financially, physically, and emotionaly,puts him in a much better light than those men who have several children with multiple women and don't support them at all! Let them live their own lives and God Bless them!
I love reading all of your comments. But I have to take offense with BIG SPENDER!! Kody Brown is not Mormon and Mormons have not practiced pologmy for over 100 years. I am a member of the Mormon church and for your information in the 1980's Pres. Reagan came to Utah to see how the Mormon Church runs it's welfare program. You see, we have our own welfare program that the government was trying to emulate. Look into it sometime, you might learn a thing or too, before passing judgement on a relgion you obviously know nothing about.
What about all the Ploygamists that "RAPE" the Federal Gov't regarding "Food Stamps, Health Care, and other items" because their "Family" doesn't have enough income to support all the kids! The people in those Polygamist cities on the Arizona/ Utah Border goes and gets their "Subsidy" checks every month, since the one man doesn't make enough to help his 4-8 wives and 20-30 kids!!
We should cut off that loophole to help the overall budget as well!!

please, please dont let the world tear you all apart. you all have to fight to stay togeather. you all seam to be such a loving family. the kids all get along and so do the siserwives. one of you say on the show you didnt just whant a husband you wanted a family. you now have to fight to keep it. please make it work for all of you.
