'Don't Stop Believin': Journey holds the message on 'Today'

Journey_550_450.jpgJourney (sans Steve Perry, natch) went to "Today" to perform their resurgent anthem "Don't Stop Believin" as part of the morning show's summer concert series.

The song and the band came back into vogue after the HBO program "The Sopranos" closed the series with the tune. It has since been used in "Glee," "Family Guy," the Broadway musical "Rock of Ages" and at countless baseball stadiums.

In an additional bit of trivia, while "Don't Stop Believin" never got higher than #9 on the U.S. Billboard chart, it has sold more than 4.5 million digital copies. This makes it the most downloaded song released in the 20th century.

The band also performed their classic power ballad "Faithfully" as well as (cue Rodney Dangerfield in "Caddyshack") "Anyway you Want It" and their new single "City of Hope."

Journey, which will celebrate 40 years together in 2013, is promoting their newest album "Eclipse."

Here's a video of their performance. Try not to sing along too loudly.

Umm...no. It ain't Journey without Steve Perry. Plain and simple. I thought that performance was horrendous!

I think it is a travesty that they accepted this award on national television without any mention of Steve Perry! Whom without this song nor the band would have the notoriety that they have. The award had a picture of the band as it is now. With some Karaoke singer who can imitate one of the best singers of all time. But that is surely all it is an imitation. Does anyone care about their new music? Not me.
Give me Steve Perry any day.

I cannot stand this band and I can't for the life of me figure out why I need to hear them every time I leave my house. It is 2011!

I for one like the new singer better than Steve Perry. Not saying Perry was bad or anything just saying I like the new singer better.

It was great!I love the new singer!!!

Without Steve Perry, they're just a Journey cover band. They dumped him for wanting to get a hip operation or something before touring because he couldn't walk without pain. They suck as people and without him, they suck as a band.

I think the new Journey is great! It is a miracle they found their new lead singer and his voice is as good, if not better than Steve Perry's. Arnel had a tough life and he deserves nothing but respect for what he has done.

It's ashame..... Steve Perry should have been there and to be the one singing. You are the greatest Steve.

Those bandmates are nasty!!!!

Journey is Journey. This band will always try to find a spot-on singer like Steve Perry. Steve Augeri was decent, but couldn't get those super high notes like Perry could. I saw the Augeri-led Journey back in 2001, here in Las Vegas. Jeff Scott Soto and original vocalist Robert Fleishman were the only vocalists they've had that didn't sound like Perry. That's what they're known by. All their most cherished songs were sung by Perry. Pineda is talented, but Perry is the true classic vocalist of Journey. Je always has been, he always will be. At my job, they have a satellite music station, and they must have played "Don't Stop Believin'" about 500 times in the 20 years i've worked there.

FRANK you are CRAZY if you think Arnel is BETTER THAN STEVE PERRY!!!!! Arnel is alright, but he over sings every part of every song. Good for him doing his thing and all but these dudes need to give it up. JOURNEY is dead. they died when Steve Perry left and brought his beautiful pipes with him. The Great Escape is a good cover band though, out of boston, check em out on youtube. MUCH BETTER THAN ARNEL
