Daniel Radcliffe sobers up: 'I became so reliant on alcohol'

Daniel Radcliffe should stick to the butterbeer.

The 21-year-old star of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" (and, uh, all the other wildly successful Harry Potter movies) revealed in a recent interview with GQ that he had struggled with an alcohol problem. He began drinking to excess in 2009, while working on "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

"I became so reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff," he admits. "There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person's lifestyle that really isn't suited to me."

He decided that it was in his best interest to remain completely booze-free, because for him, moderation is a struggle. "As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time - that doesn't work for me. I do that very unsuccessfully," he says.

These days, instead of partying, Radcliffe gets his kicks in a healthier way. He prefers to "sit at home and read or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh."
