Tony Awards: 'Book of Mormon' musical heavily favored

The "Book of Mormon" musical, from the minds of "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is up for 14 Tony Awards during Sunday night's (June 12) ceremony, airing live from the Beacon Theatre in New York.The musical is one shy of the record for nominations, held by "The Producers," and is heavily favored to take home many of the awards for which it is nominated. "Mormon" has already won Best Musical from the Drama League, the Outer Critics Circle and the New York Drama Critics' Circle.
In typical "South Park" fashion, "Mormon" goes high brow by paying homage to musicals like "The King and I" and "The Lion King," but it also goes a little low brow - the actual Book of Mormon ends up inside a character's anus at one point.
The big awards have most likely come down to a two-horse race between the humorous "Mormon" and the serious "Scottsboro Boys," a musical that tells the story of nine black teenagers in the 1930s who were wrongfully accused of rape.
The 65th annual Tony Awards air live on CBS Sunday night and are hosted once again by stage veteran and "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris.

This is disgusting. I am Mormon myself, and all I want to know is why these mongrels make fun of our scriptures. they are just as holy as the bible, and I don't see anyone persecuting any of the other churches out there.
Elise--I'm only part Mormon (the part that likes to Fu..!) and I don't share your sentiments. Loosen up--other religions are made fun of all the time--they are just as ridiculous as ours.
Elise- The book of mormon is NOT "as holy as the bible". Sacred scripture is God's revelation to man. The book of mormon is a weird story made up by some bored and lonely guy.
While not a Mormon myself, I find this drivel pathetic and sad. Mind you, if this were about Muslems and the Koran, not only would the same "open-minded" people be aghast but the politicians would be up in arms as well. In our society only Christians are allowed to be ridiculed in such perverse ways.

Actually, Trey Parker and Matt Stone poked fun at Muslims in several South Park episodes, and continued to do so even after receiving death threats. So don't feel too singled out as a Mormon, Elise. Equal opportunity offenders, they are.
