Princess Diana's fake Facebook page. Really, Newsweek?

Obviously, we joined in the largely negative reaction to Newsweek's latest cover featuring an aged-up Princess Diana. The magazine depicts a zombie-like People's Princess strolling along with Kate Middleton, who would have been her daughter-in-law had Diana lived to see son William marry.The backlash to Newsweek's artistic license and editor Tina Brown's cover story imagining Diana at 50 (her birthday is Friday, July 1) was immediate and overwhelmingly negative.
But it would seem Brown and Newsweek weren't done tinkering with the memory of Princess Diana yet. On Wednesday (June 29), the magazine posted a sample of what Princess Diana's Facebook profile page might look like had she survived into this era of social networking and total misuse of PhotoShop.
The page lists Diana's relationship status as "It's complicated." Really? Do we not think she would've sorted things out with Dodi Fayed by 2011? According to Diana' picks, she's a proud fan not only of saving Darfur, but Colin Firth, "The Tudors" and Bravo's "Real Housewives of New York."
She's also -- how nice! -- friends with Camilla Parker-Bowles, her widower's new wife -- the one with whom he carried on a torrid affair while married to Diana. Additional Facebook pals include Bono, Melinda Gates, fellow royal ex Sarah Ferguson and Huma Abedin, wife of sexting Congressman Anthony Weiner. Brown should be given full credit for not numbering herself among Diana's 107,623 friends.
Reaction from Facebookers to the page was, as expected, mostly negative.
"I will put this as nicely as I can: What the hell are you guys doing? This is some sychophantic, disturbing stuff," wrote one reader.
What do you think? Did Newsweek merely suffer a momentary lapse in taste or is this perhaps all part of a publicity stunt to bring the ailing news magazine some eyeballs?
