Newsweek's 'Princess Diana at 50' cover: Too far or way too far?
Given our international fixation with Princess Diana, it's not surprising that we wonder how differently the world might be now if she hadn't died in 1997 and lived to see her upcoming 50th birthday (this July 1).
But there's got to be a classy, non-creepy way of doing that...
Newsweek's latest cover story, "Diana at 50: If She Were Here Now," hypothesizes how the people's princess would have fit into the 21st century. And while the copy doesn't rock the boat -- she'd totally use Twitter, right? -- the artwork seems offensive on several levels.
Aging Diana with what looks like a lazy Photoshop job, the cover shows her walking alongside would-be daughter-in-law Kate Middleton -- more like a zombie in a hat than the dignified beauty we lost to a car accident. Inside she's rendered less-awkwardly aged, but clutching an iPhone. (Why not?)
The article comes courtesy of Newsweek editor-in-chief and Diana biographer Tina Brown, and we're wondering what exactly she was thinking.
No one wants to be remembered like this.

Newsweek is known for this kind of nonsense so it's not that surprising. And they've gotten the publicity they wanted so kudos to them, I suppose.
Woah -.- This is pretty terrible. It makes 'The Sun' seem classy. Awful.
The cover photo is actually far less offensive than their typical smooching of Obama's butt in their content
Bottom line.. This was done in very bad taste! Period...
It just came out that Kate Middleton is distantly related to Jane Austen. As one of her characters had occasion to say, "Badly done." That fits this situation well.
hmmm,..i wonder how things would be if Lady Di is still alive(--)?
it would have been wonderful if she was there to witness her son's wedding..
I really had hoped that we'd be finished with the Diana stories nearly 15 years after her death. The beatification of her post-divorce has always made me bonkers in the first place -- she was a human being with flaws as well as good qualities. When she was still married to Prince Charles, she frequently did not behave in public as the Princess of Wales should. I realize she had many good qualities, but a saint she was not, and the constant promotion of her as one drives me up a wall. Let the poor woman rest in peace, and give the rest of us a break from the bombardment of Diana stories.
They need to pull this cover and issue an apology for being such insensitive clods.
i'm sorry but i busted out laughing when i read the title to this because it is exactly what i thought when i saw this pic.
seriously...who at newsweek thought this was a good idea? are their sales really that horrible? i'm goin to guess yes.
