'Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer' reviews: Critics are bummed

judy-moody.jpgThe reviews are out for "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer," a new kids movie release starring Heather Graham and newcomer Jordana Beatty. And they are not complimentary.

Kyle Smith of the New York  Post writes, "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" is sure to appeal to kids of all ages from 6 to 9 who are female and have no taste or sense of humor."

The Boston Herald's James Verniere says, "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer begins with bedazzled credits, and it's downhill from there."

Scott Chitwood of Coming Soon writes, "If you need to entertain kids for a couple of hours this summer, then Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer fits the bill. But if you're looking to be entertained as well, you may want to select another film."

Hollywood.com's Thomas Leupp says, "It's super-awful-crapadelic!"

We thought there was more of a sliding scale for kids movies. Some of our fondest kids movie memories are of crap like "Return to Oz" and "Care Bears in Wonderland." Are kids movies all supposed to be cinematic gems nowadays?

Anyway, despite the critics' displeasure, "Judy Moody" did rustle up $2.2 million at the box office Friday night, which is solid for a $20 million kids movie. That number should get decidedly better as kids go to the weekend matinees.

Adults need to learn that sometimes a kids movie is a kids movie. Hands off, let the kids decide. Not everything is about grown ups.

let me guess... the critics panning this movie are the SAME critics that thought ROSANNE BARR was funny.
Kid's movies should be reviewed by KIDS - Period.
(You know what they say: If you're not talented yourself, become a Critic")

Re:Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer - thank God for the New York Times whose critic has a mind of his own and appreciated the movie.
"The whole film is a celebration of messy, colorful, vigorous creativity,....Imagery and movement - not gratuitous destruction - prevail."
My family loved it.

Uh, hold up: RETURN TO OZ is *not* crap!

"super-awful-crapadelic"

THAT'S FUNNY!

Kids should be rating this, not adults! This movie was super for kids of all ages in my opinion, probably the best movie in the theaters for children in a while!

Kids should be rating this, not adults! This movie was super for kids of all ages in my opinion, probably the best movie in the theaters for children in a while! Not only that, but Megan McDonald writes through the eyes of a child, so of course the words and jokes would be childish. Very much like the books, the directors and actors did a great job on this one.

Dude - not for nothing, but an hour of Heather Graham bouncing around on screen is kinda worth the $30 to bring the kids and buy popcorn... Jus' sayin...
