Gay marriage legal in New York: Celebrities react via Twitter, obviously
Perhaps it's a sign of the times that every time something significant happens in the political landscape - be it the Egyptians overthrowing a dictator, Osama Bin Laden being found and shot, or marriage equality becoming a reality in New York - our first instinct is to hop on Twitter.People used to gather in the streets to rejoice or riot (and, okay, sometimes people do that) but today, Twitter is where we all meet to toast, cheer, and/or complain loudly. It's where every voice is heard, and heard immediately.
So, when same-sex marriage was legalized in New York (at least, once the bill has become a law) following a Senate vote late Friday night, Twitter is where we went to celebrate. Here are some of our favorite celebrity tweets from immediately after the vote was finalized. Did we miss a great one? Leave links to your faves in the comments section below.
Neil Patrick Harris: It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!
KathyGriffin: tonight we're all New Yorkers! Straight & gay alike, let's all celebrate marriage #equality. The right side of history!
James Morrison ("24"): NY! Albany! Did the right thing! It's a civil rights thing & it's beautiful! Are we waking up?! Is America starting to wake up?! Beautiful!
Darren Criss: As if I didn't already have enough to celebrate and enjoy today. A big hug for New York from my lone hotel room in London. #MarriageEquality. I sing it every night, but now it has better meaning: "New York- concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there's nothing you can't do." :)
Russel Brand: It is now legal to do a gay marriage in NYC @AlecBaldwin, carpe diem.
Eliza Dushku: Welcome to the present NY ;) #equality
Lady Gaga: I can't stop crying. We did it kids. http://twitpic.com/5gehdu - The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice+equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it!!!
And, possibly our favorite of the night -- Seth Meyers: In the last 10 minutes I've had 100 missed calls from Stefon.
David Tyree hasn't tweeted as of publishing time. We're waiting, sir.

Woooooooooooooooooo!!!!! Marriage Equality!!!!!! A truly historic night and a cause for celebration. Pride in NYC is gonna be IN-SANE this weekend!
Marriage in US is already meaningless as more than fifty percent now results in divorce. How much more for the third sex? Marriage is for the believers only. No need for the perverts...
@hermes: it seems the straight folks are the ones making it meaningless, and that divorce rate is all yours, too. And marriage isn't for believers only. There's no religion check when people get married, nor should there be.
If you want to live in your little world, then fine. The rest of us will move forward and build a better, more inclusive world.
Being gay isn't a perversion. Narrow mindedness and bigotry, however... there's your perversion.
I am glad that my state will now have same gender couples able to tie the knot here. That is amazing! I am really excited because I helped make this possible. Western New York made this possible!
OK, when can I marry my pet sheep? We're tired of living in the closet. Please, legalize bestiality!
@Fred why do you and your ilk keep up with this 'bestiality' nonsense? It's just such a poor argument, and it makes you look stupid.
