Box Office: 'Super 8' strong Friday, 'Judy Moody' solid

super-8-judy-moody.jpgThe Friday numbers are in and "Super 8," the supernatural thriller from Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams, has run away with the box office at an estimated very solid $12.1 million. The movie already earned $1 million in Thursday early screenings, so it is on pace for a robust $35 million opening weekend.

"X-Men: First Class" remained strong, as it took in a decent $8 million for Friday night and "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" had a good Friday night showing (for a small movie) at $2.2 million. And "Judy Moody" is a kids movie, so the numbers should get decidedly better as kids go to matinees over the weekend.

Woody Allen's new movie "Midnight in Paris" expanded to 944 screens and took in a decent $1.6 million. It should top $10 million this weekend, in its limited release. And finally, both "The Hangover II" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" brought in enough money Friday to bring their domestic box office totals to over $200 million apiece.
