Box Office' 'Super 8' easy winner at $38 million
Studio estimates have the J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg sci-fi mystery "Super 8" opening to a robust $38 million, which is about $10 million above what pre-release estimates had the movie earning its opening weekend. This makes "Super 8" the first live-action, original, non-sequel movie to garner the no. 1 spot at the box office in nearly three months. The last one was "Limitless" the weekend of March 18-20.
In the rest of the field, "X-Men: First Class" was second with $25 million, "The Hangover II" was third with $18.5 million. The only other new movie in the field, "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer," opened with a weak $6.3 million, putting it at the low end of the range of pre-release estimates.
We'll have the full Top 10 for you when the numbers are available.

Loved Super 8 - An adult "ET."
Enjoyed Super 8. Although the leads were a bunch of kids...This is not a kids movie... An I would agree this was an adults ET. Movie may scare very young children...
Hey y'all,
I got to tell all....I'm finally out of the credit cellar. Been long and hard 5 years since I've gotten into the gutter. But its all over - YAY! I got a brand new car loan and going to get myself a new MuSTANG for the summer!
You can too clean all that ISH. Call these guys at 888-338-3875. In 3 months they got me clean and for 45 bucks it can't be beat. They do all the leg work.
My friend was rockin' a 450 score, and they cleaned him up too.
Really? 38 million is 10 million above what was estimated for opening? That is way below what I was expecting. I thought 50-55 million, so this is way less. Hopefully it'll play strong, because I'm a huge fan of Abrams and want him to feel like he can try his hand at everything out there. He's not led me wrong yet.
I just cannot believe how much money studios are spending, on making movies, these days. Back in the "glory days", of Hollywood, a movie could gross just $5 million, and be considered a "HIT",or "Success". Nowadays, too many movies spend so much, on publicity, and "tie-in" products, that movies must "haul" hundreds of millions just to "break even". Take, for example, Harry Potter. the movie might cost just $25 million, to $75 million, but, to be considered a "success", with a "tie-in" campaign, of over $150 million, the movie had to take in over $200 million, just to "break even". I wonder how long it will be before a movie will be considered a LOSS, if it grosses less than $1 billion?
Honestly, Super 8 was very good. The characters were terrific, the kids mostly. I appreciate how the fat kid was making a video to get the girl. I like the way Elle Fanning played a first time, but surprisingly good, actor. I am, however, not as sold on how it ended simply because it seemed that certain scenes with the alien was rather artificial, i.e. selective magnetic attraction towards the end, the kid with braces should have been pulled towards the tower. Now, I was way too young to recall the 70s, nevertheless Super 8 felt realistic enough. Needless to say, we smrked during the walkman scene. Thumbs up in my view.
Well acted, original, worth the money to see...
Super 8 is no Blockbuster, but it is a very enjoyable movie... Besides having a very good unknown cast, the story line is orginial.... I think this movie will be a 'sleeper hit.'
thumbs up!
Oh my god I loved super 8.... It's one of my favorite movies
