Box Office: 'Green Lantern' opens soft with $53 million

green-lantern-vs-parallax.jpgSo we guess this means no sequel?

Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern" underperformed at the box office this weekend, bringing in $53 million, which didn't meet the studio's lowered expectation after experiencing a 21 percent drop-off from Friday to Saturday. The studio is hoping the superhero flick starring Ryan Reynolds experiences a Father's Day boost.

The weekend's other new release "Mr. Popper's Penguins" starring Jim Carrey came in third with $18 million, meeting the studio's expectation, but still underwhelming.

J.J. Abrams' supernatural thriller "Super 8" still had a super-strong hold on moviegoers this weekend. The film, which stars relative unknowns, had a budget of $50 million and has already grossed $72 million. Another win for J.J. Abrams!

"X-Men: First Class" starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender ($11.5M) and "The Hangover Part ll" with $9.6 million rounded out the top five.

Here's the weekend Top 10:

No. 1: "Green Lantern" -- $53M

No. 2: "Super 8" -- $21.3 M

No. 3: "Mr. Popper's Penguins" -- $18.2M

$53 million is soft?

My nephews loved the "Green Lantern", so did other friends who've seen it. For some reason, it seems the critics are trying to sabotage this movie.

'$53 million is soft?'

It is when it cost $300 million to make. Green Lantern was a BAD idea for DC to use as a way of branching out because of the hardcore sci-fi element costing so much. The Flash or Wonder Woman would've cost much less & not have been such a risk.

I'm still planning to watch it!

the wonder woman tv show will be a big enough bust for dc.

Let's see how the story line of tese character goes, it's one of DC heavy hitters it may make money on the long run

haven't watched it yet. but still planning... let's see if it is what they say it is.. a crap..

If you consider recycling old storylines, throwing together discards pieces of script and then slapping your name on it to call it a movie, then yes "Super 8" is a "win" for JJ Abrams. Still doesn't negate the fact that it is ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES OF THE YEAR!

Another crappy comic book movie. I feel like they've made almost every comic into a movie. Whats next Mighty Mouse, staring Nicolas Cage?

well! see it for yourself before you make comment.
