U2's Bono, The Edge agree with scathing 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' reviews

The seemingly cursed Broadway adaptation of "Spider-Man," whose score U2 frontman Bono penned along with bandmate The Edge, is undergoing a major face lift.

With a new director and revamped script, the $70 million musical will officially re-open on June 14th. In the meantime, Bono chats with Nightline on Friday (May 20) about the horrendous critiques and what he thinks of former director Julie Taymor.

"That's the sort of stuff we were saying backstage." he quips in response to the reviews. "It might have been a little hard for some other people around here to take that, but we don't disagree with the New York Times."

He is referring to Taymor, who apparently couldn't see a need for change.

"Julie would not accept this," he adds. "She got very close to it, so close, perhaps, that she couldn't see it. And we were going out and coming back and we could see very clearly what we thought were the problems and she didn't think they were as big a problem as we did."

Still, there are no hard feelings for the former collaborators.

"Julie is an incredible artist, really a very gifted girl. I think it's -- it's a shame she's not with us to see it to its conclusion, because a lot of what's magic about it is hers."

Bono also explains that the show's makeover boasts a "clear story line" and "characters that you're getting to know." Commenting, "There's lots of really obvious stuff that has been fixed."

"Some people call me 'Spidey Doc,'" new director Phil McKinley jokes of the new changes.
