On 'Oprah,' Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts share their relationship secrets; disappoint with favorite things giveaway

larry-crowne.jpgOn Friday (May 6), Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts shared their secrets for marriage longevity (not to each other) with Oprah Winfrey's audience.

"I happen to still be married because I'm not an idiot," said Hanks. Hanks has been married to Rita Wilson for 23 years.

Roberts, on the other hand, credited romantic chemistry for her happy nine-year marriage to Danny Moder. "I'm just in love with my husband," she said. But we bet it's because he, like Hanks, is not an idiot.

The pair was mocked online following their appearance for what were apparently considered sub-par "favorite things" giveaways. Roberts gave each audience member makeup, an herb rub, a workout tape and a tote bag while Hanks added an espresso maker.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, disgruntled viewers tweeted their dismay Friday afternoon.

"Julia Roberts is such a cheap-a**," wrote one. "I can't believe the crap she gave away on Oprah."

Hanks and Roberts co-star in the upcoming "Larry Crowne," Hanks' first return to feature film directing since 1996's "That Thing You Do." In it, Hanks plays a middle-aged salesman who reinvents himself by going back to college. Roberts comes into the picture as his professor/love interest. They last worked together on 2007's "Charlie Wilson's War."

Look for "Larry Crowne" in theaters July 1.

Selfish twits.

And I mean the people complaining, not Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts.

You go to a show and are in the audience. The guests are not REQUIRED to bring you a damn thing. These guys gave you free stuff just for you showing up and you're going to complain?

Shut up. If you don't want the espresso maker, I'll gladly take it, you ungrateful tossers.

I guess we all forgot that Tom Hanks left his wife and two small boys for Rita Wilson after he made a movie with her. Long live longevity, Tom.

They are complaining because the FREE gifts they got weren't what they wanted? They don't even need to be given gifts, that is just a bonus. Bunch of ungrateful brats.

is it just me, or does Julia Roberts kinda make you feel a little nauseated just listening to her......

Another reason why some of America should not be allowed to vote. HELLO PEOPLE can you READ THIS? It was not the Audience members complaining about the items it was VIEWERS repeat again.. VIEWERS not AUDIENCE. Are we clear?

How low has our society dipped when the people who go on Oprah can be so ungrateful? When was it a prerequisite to get gifts from attending a talk show? It disgusts me to think that we have become such a grasping greedy group that they can tweet about these things. How generous are the complainers in what they do for other? I bet they are just a bunch of "takers". Stop complaining all of you.

It says viewers complained but why would people that didn't get the free stuff complain about how cheap it was? Why would it matter to them?

Keith,

Because for the promo of the show they kept showing the "favorite things" like it was a huge part of the show. It ended up being almost at the last segment and was not thrilling to watch. The bigger the gift the more fun it is to watch the reactions. Funny thing was I think even O herself was embarrassed.

First, you got into the audience of a show you care about which I think was free (I think) and if they had to pay big deal you don't go to the movies for free stuff. Second, why is it the guests job to bring the free swag. If Oprah want to give stuff away she can pay for it and if she though the stuff Tom Hank and Julia Roberts pick wasn't good enough for her muncher audience then she should have picked out more stuff.

Free stuff is free stuff, be grateful!

To skylark66: Paul Newman stayed in the marriage to Joanne Woodward for half a century, and she was his SECOND wife. I think Tom Hanks is able to go in that direction.
