Harold Camping and Family Radio probably love this Iceland volcano eruption

As you may have noticed -- or read in our comprehensive live-blog -- the world did not end on May 21, 2011.

This expected development has lead many to posit that apocalypse predictor Harold Camping, whose Family Radio has led the campaign for the Judgment Day, is about to get his comeuppance.

After littering the United States with foreboding billboards for months, the egg is now very clearly on his face. But at least the day wasn't natural disaster-free. Iceland's most active volcano erupted with several hours left in d-day, and MSNBC reports 18,000-foot plumes of smoke are shooting in the air and prompting 50 small earthquakes.

Well, that's something, Harold! (We jest because there are no reported injuries or fatalities.)

But Camper remains silent. Reuters reports the evangelist's  Family Radio has only played church music and pre-recorded advice programs all day.

I believe he made his prediction for 6PM in whatever time zone he's in. Also, to clarify, the world is not supposed to end for another five months; rather, today, is when a small portion of the Earth's population will be Raptured.

Not a believer or anything, but I think you might as well be accurate when typing this up.

I wish those like Mr. Camping would stop scaring little children that the world will end at9:00p.m.today.It is hard to reassure your child that all will be fine.Is he going to be quiet now? I doubt it!

Have you heard of anyone being raptured J? If so then we can talk about the next 5 months ...

you shouldn't let your kids watch garbage or the news since they are the same... there is no god, no end of times, deal with it.

This guy should be raptured, these followers sold their houses, quit their jobs, gave their money to the church. And this guy sits on all their money and coverage. Another reason religion gets a bad name, much less severe but none the less simply stupid. And these people are adults and believe in this CRAP

He's 89 years old. The apocalypse might be coming, but it's only coming for him.

Just to clarify and please Harold Camping, the eruption of the vulcano Grimsvötn in Iceland was detected around 7 PM local time, according to Haraldur Eriksson of the Iclandic meteorological institute, so it might well have started at 6 PM.

Excuse me J but what you are not mentioning is he said that in addition to the saved being raptured, that there were going to be castastrophic earthquakes all over the world starting at 6pm for each time zone. None of this happened. So all of you people who believe this crap go back to taking your meds. It aint happening!!!

How could it of erupted at seven if it was on the five o'clock news???...

Cece, the eruption was detected 7 PM local time for Iceland (that's 4 PM US eastern time).

According to geologist Hjörleifur Sveinbjörnsson at the Icelandic meteorological institute they have also registered about 50 minor earthquakes around the volcano, and the smoke has already risen over 19 kilometors upwards. They also said the eruption is larger than that of Eyafjallajökull last year that stopped all transatlantic and European flights.
