'Friday the 13th': Origins, phobia and a goalie mask
Friday marks a fun day that happens one to three times every year - a Friday the 13th. Why is it considered an especially creepy day? Well, there were no known references to it being an unlucky or spooky day before the mid-1800s. Most historians posit that it's a combination of the unlucky number 13 and Friday, which is supposedly an unlucky day. Friday has been considered unlucky since its mention as such in "The Canterbury Tales" and also because Jesus was supposedly crucified on a Friday. There is an actual phobia of Friday the 13th and it's called "friggatriskaidekaphobia," which is derived from "Frigga," the Norse god for whom Friday is named and "triskaidekaphobia," which is the fear of the number 13.
Will you be doing anything fun? This is the only Friday the 13th we get in 2011. Hopefully some theaters in your neck of the woods are showing one or more of the movie franchise. If you're in the Chicagoland area, the wonderful Music Box Theatre is hosting a midnight showing of the original "Friday the 13" on both the 13th and 14th.
Do you have a favorite installment of the franchise? For our money, you can't beat the 1980 original (isn't that always the way?), but weirdly enough, we're also partial to "Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood," where the girl facing off with Jason at the end has telekinetic powers.
Happy Friday the 13th tomorrow!

great movis... except for the first one... dont know why the critics hated it
The first was the best. Followed by parts 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 3, 7, 9, 8. Saw part 3 in 3d at the theater. It was fun at the time. One of the better 3d movies. The story was weak though. For some strange reason I do like part 10 more than I probably should.
You mean triskaidekaphobia isn't a fear of Triscuits? Lol
yay! it's fri d 13th- let's party! :D
