Box Office: 'Bridesmaids' impresses, but 'Thor' holds fast to first place

bridesmaids-520.jpgAs expected, "Thor" remains the No. 1 film at the Box Office for the second week in a row. Thanks to its wide appeal, the Marvel flick brought home a weekend total of $34 million.

What is surprising this week, is the success of Universal's "Bridesmaids." The Kristen Wiig led chick comedy earned an impressive $24.5 mil in its first run, far exceeding expectations. With the help of (mostly) fabulous reviews and a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, "Bridesmaids" just might be paving the way for more raunchy gal comedies in the future. Hooray!

It was also a good weekend for "Priest," which opened to $15.5 mil. Reportedly, Sony only expected between $10 and $12 mil for the post apocalyptic horror picture, even with a Friday the 13th release date.

Here's the top 10:

1. "Thor," $34M
2. "Bridesmaids," $24.5M
3. "Fast Five," $20.2M
4. "Priest," $15.5M
5. "Rio," $8M
6. "Something Borrowed," $7.5M
7. "Jumping The Broom," $6.5M
8. "Water For Elephants," $4M
9. "Madea's Big Happy Family," $1.8M
10. "Soul Surfer," $1.5M

It is unfortunate that Everything Must Go, Skateland, The High Cost of Living, Brother's Justice, The Big Bang and Hesher are only being released in select cities and that we won’t find out how they would have done commercially if released nationwide. Most of them have interesting casts.
It would have been interesting to see how smaller films for the leads would do commercially.

They should utilise the 34 villains and 16 allies listed on Wikipedia that weren’t in Thor (2011) in future sequels.

Well, all that talk of a Thor collapse seems to have been premature.
