Avenged Sevenfold pays tribute to late drummer with 'So Far Away'

avenged-sevenfold-sullivan.jpg Nearly a year and a half after their drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, passed away, Avenged Sevenfold pays tribute to his memory with their latest video for "So Far Away" from their album "Nightmare."

Sullivan's cause of death was "acute polydrug intoxication due to combined effects of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/Nordiazepam and ethanol" -- in other words, an accidental prescription drug overdose. He passed away on December 28, 2009. The band, still grieving, returned to the studio that February to record the album.

The video premiered on MTV on Tuesday, May 10, and was directed by prolific video guru Wayne Isham. On the band's official website, they write, "This video is a raw and emotional tribute to Avenged Sevenfold's late drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and celebrates the long-time friendship the band members have shared since forming A7X in Huntington Beach, CA, in 1999."

"So Far Away" was written by Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates in honor of Sullivan, who was his best friend. Sullivan's favorite drummer, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, sits in on the track. Portnoy also toured with the band in 2010 before they found their new drummer, Arin Ilejay, a 22-year old newcomer to the scene.
