'The Hobbit': Peter Jackson posts first video from set, activates our geek receptors
"The Hobbit" has started production in New Zealand, which is good news for the "Lord of the Rings"-loving masses. Even better news: Director Peter Jackson is once again providing updates from the set, complete with high-definition video.
Jackson's first video, a walkthrough of several "Hobbit" sets and behind-the-scenes preparations, has us starting to count the days until December 2012, when the first of the two-part story is scheduled for release. He takes us through some familiar sets from the "Lord of the Rings" movies -- Bilbo's home at Bag End, Rivendell -- and shows us a little bit of the work going on in the costume shop.
You'll also see shots of fight preparation, an actor in full dwarf regalia (with his back to the camera, unfortunately) discussing a bit of action and a little bit of blocking with Martin Freeman (Bilbo), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and other cast members gathering around Bilbo's table. Jackson is also an excellent tour guide -- he's every bit as excited to be making the movie as fans are.
The release of "The Hobbit: Part 1" is just a little under 19 months away. Here's Jackson's dispatch from the set:

The butcher of middle earth is back.
indy.....what are you on?? Jackson followed the trilogy very faithfully!
The trilogy was one of the best in movie history. I am sure both of these movies will be amazing and faithful.
cats, you made me chuckle. And before anyone brings up Bombadil...I did not miss bombadil, I don't care bombadil was omitted, I understand the omission of bombadil.
You have your opinion of Jackson...I have mine. I'll leave you to yours...leave me to mine.
Glad to see most people disagree with indy. You don't make movies to exactly follow the book. You give your interpretation. Plus, for LOTR it'd be impossible, it's far too long. And some things that work for books don't work for films and vice versa. For example, Tom Bambadil. Loved him in the books, but would clash with the tone in the movie and ulltiately, Tom has nothing to do with Frodo getting the ring to Mordor.
*Bombadil. Sorry. Typo.
Kel,Once again I do NOT care Bombadil was omitted. I'll say it again. Do Not Care. That being said Tom did have something to do with Frodo getting to Mordor. Tom rescued the Hobbits from Old Man Willow and the Barrow Wight. If not for Tom the quest was over right there.
This video rocks!! makes me want to see this movie. Will be intresting since the hobbit has 20 people in pretty much the whole journey
PS: In defeating the barrow wright tom gave the hobbits the westernesse blade that was made to slay nazgul and then he took care of bill the pony. how can you not like bombadil.
movie didnt portray it that way but thats what happened.
anonymous. YES! One of my favorite passages. "and so passed the sword of the barrow downs, work of westernesse..etc..."
Witch King of Angmar = Chief Nazgul
I would have preferred Tom and Barrow downs to Aragorn getting lost and left behind (didn't happen as you know)...but don't mind Tom's omission.
I also think the march of the ents to war would have been epic.
I still laugh about Jackson's version of the Ents. Ents don't march off to war...but they are at Isengard none the less when Treebeard calls them. Such sillyness.
i just farted and it smells really bad. where were we? oh, yes, wait ... really, who cares about dislikers? i'm sure, the *two* hobbits will make it.
