'Smallville's' Tom Welling talks Superman movie: Will he ever play Clark Kent again?
When Christopher Nolan's Superman movie, "Man of Steel," was announced, fervent speculation about who would play Clark Kent began immediately. Henry Cavill ultimately won the role, with Amy Adams as his Lois Lane. The casting news didn't stop "Smallville" fans from insisting that TV's Tom Welling, who recently wrapped the show after 10 years -- was the only Clark for them.In a recent radio interview, Welling said that despite rumors, he was never approached about "Man of Steel." He wasn't offended about being overlooked, though.
"This is the second [Superman] film that will be made since I've played Clark Kent," he says. "I know that it's very complicated due to where I was and being on a television show... I wasn't asked, I don't know if I was considered or not, but I do know they went in a different direction."
As for a possible cameo appearance, Welling says, "Not that I know of! It could be? No, I have no information supporting that allegation, unfortunately." He doesn't sound particularly averse to the idea, though.
One thing is for sure - Welling plans to see the film when it hits theaters in December 2012. "I can't wait to see it, I think they have a dream team with everyone involved and it's going to be a fantastic movie, and I'm just as excited to see it as anybody else," he says enthusiastically. "Christopher Nolan doesn't do anything that's not the best."
Now that "Smallville" is over, Welling is looking forward to trying on some new hats. "I hope to play many different characters in what I'd like to think would be a career in this business," he says.
If The CW's "Hellcats," which he executive produces, gets picked up for a second season, he looks forward to directing an episode or two. "I would love to. I can't wait to...be a part of that," he says of the show, which films in "Smallville's" old stomping grounds of Vancouver. "I know the city well, it's very dear to my heart, and we have a lot of friends, friends who have become family, up there, so I can't wait to get up here."
He and his wife, Jamie, are also working on developing a film and another TV show within their production company.
That said, they did take a little time to have fun after Welling left the "Smallville" set for the last time. Jamie threw him a "Happy Unemployment" surprise party.
"[It was] the only surprise party I've ever had thrown for me in my life," he laughs. "I'm still a little bit shocked that it happened. I can only imagine what I looked like when I walked through that door. I thought, 'I know all these people! Why are they throwing Jamie a party?'"

Carina, this was an interview that he did with a close friend. And you are trying to pass it off as some huge scoop?
Then add to that, that you completely misquoted him yesterday when you released it the first time.
Seriously? I love news about Tom Welling. But you are a pathetic hack with this stuff.
Well, mabey when this new "Superman" bombs like the last one, the WB heads will come begging for Tom to play the new man of steel. The people over at WB have made bad casting decisions once again with this new version. Why for GOD sake have they pick an actress who has no qualities of Lois Lane, not to mention another Brit in the role of a real american hero. I can't wait to see this disaster hit the Big Screen in 2012, of course I will not be paying to see it, I will purchase a ticket for another none WB movie like I did for the last piece of s#!t "Superman" movie they tried to pass off on us.
I wish Tom the best and honestly I think he is ready to try new things beyond Clark Kent. As for the Man of Steel, I wish it the best like Tom does. As for people complaining about who they cast for the new movie: Make your own movie and quit griping about a movie that has not been made yet!
Tom Welling can still play Superman whenever they make a Justice League movie! As far as this version coming up, as long as the world doesn't end around the time that it is released it should be good. Anything is better than that 2006 version where they stupidly gave Superman a retarded son with asthma. That was lame. So anything will be better than that.
Tom has grown so much over the past 10 years. I didn't think Tom could carry a movie until recently. His portrayal of Ultraman and bumbling Clark Kent was right on target. I personally hope there is a "Smallville: The Movie" or a Justice League with our the Smallville actors. Erica and Tom along with Justin, Michael, Allison and Cassidy make a great team. After 10 years, I am really going to miss Smallville. I hope that Erica and Tom will continue to work together. They are a beautiful couple and work very good together.
I'm looking forward to the new Superman movie but I can't believe they picked Zod to be the villain. I think it's suicice. We've seen that already and, with the DVD medium, it's easy to see again. Also, thanks to the Donner cut, it doesn't seem so old.
I think they should have taken a page from Marvel. They want a fight scene, they should have SOLOMON GRUNDY. Since we will never see Superman vs HULK, that's the next best thing and I'm sure fans would EAT IT UP!!
Come on, Welling, you gotta play the part in JLA! As a huge Superman fan, i believe in you! I know for a damn fact that, that your a better actor than Cavill and you fit for the part far better than him. besides, HE'S TOO DAMN SHORT!! YOU'D BE GREAT IN THE JLA MOVIE!!!!!!!!!
Ange your facts are wrong. Amy is not a Brit, she is born to American parents. She was born in italy.
I am disappointed that they never even approached Tom Welling for the new Superman role. For me Tom is Superman, how could they cast a brit to play the part. It's like casting an American to play James Bond.( NO WAY!!) I am looking forward to the new Superman movie but I kinda of hope it bombs. Cast Tom for the Justice League movie.
I have been a Superman addict all my life. My wife thinks I love the show as much as I do her. I have seen every episode of Smallville. I hate that the show has ended. I hope that Tom Welling play SUPERMAN.I Would love to meet him some day wish he had a Facebook link.
