'Rio' stifles 'Scream 4' at Friday's box office

Animated birds trumped snarky horror fans at Friday's box office as "Rio" opened ahead of "Scream 4.""Rio," a G-rated 3-D animated movie featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, earned an estimated $10.2 million on Friday (April 15), putting it on pace for an opening-weekend take of $30 million or more. That's in line with pre-release forecasts.
"Scream 4," meanwhile, was a bit of a disappointment on its opening day. The latest installment in Wes Craven's meta-horror series made $8 million to finish in second -- not a bad start, but lower than what most box-office watchers were expecting. It's expected to make in the neighborhood of $20 million for the weekend, which would put it well behind the openings of both 1997's "Scream 2" ($32.9 million) and 2000's "Scream 3" ($34.7 million).
There was a pretty big drop from second to third place, where last week's leader, "Hop," and "Insidious" tied for third place with $2.3 million each. "Hanna" and "Soul Surfer" tied for fifth, each making an estimated $2.1 million.
A little further down the list, the Robert Redford-directed drama "The Conspirator," which opened on just over 700 screens, made $1.1 million.

Since Insidious was made for only 1 milion, it should be considered a big hit.
Atlas Shrugged did extremely well if you look at per screen averages in only a few theatres.
I'm sorry but scream 4 is a big franchise that is rebooting and has been nonexistent for a little over 10 years now and they did not advertise this big comeback at all.. I hope it got good reviews.. I loved scream and scream 2 and was disappointed with the 3rd installment but as a fan I still liked it lol... Maybe overtime the movie will garner some buzz because I was thinking scream 4 would have pulled easily over 30 mil in its first weekeend and grossed over 120 mil overall.. Guess I was way off.. Also with names like eisenberg and hatthaway in the movie rio I'm not surprised to see this animated film breaking 30 mil with it having current award nominee/winners and it being a childrens movie not a shocker at all.. rob redfords movie did awesome for 700 screens and over 1 mil congrats..
Why is no mentioning that RIO is in 3-D - higher ticket prices! I have no interest whatsoever seeing RIO, but SCREAM 4 - I will definitely see again!!! It was such a great movie!

I loved Scream 4. I just wish it had the balls to kill off one of the original cast members. My only other beef was that both of the killers turned out to be short wimpy type kids who would not have been physically able to kill people they way they did. Durring several scenes the killer was taller than all of the cast members except that Trevor guy. But all is forgivin' with Anthony Anderson's awesome death scene.
SCREAM 4 was awesomeeeeeeeee. yeah rio was in 3D so duh it would rank in more. 3D sucks anyways. i will never pay money for them. their not even 3D anymore, just a money scam if you ask me.. Scream 4 was awesome though.
