Gayle King addresses the lesbian rumors (again) and daytime TV without Oprah Winfrey
Most people know Gayle King as Oprah Winfrey's BFF. Outside of that she has a pretty stellar resume herself, including an 18-year stint as the anchor at a Harford, Conn. news station. Now, she's helming "The Gayle King Show" on OWN, but she still makes time to get Oprah's back.
"She's my closest, closest friend," King tells TV Guide Magazine. "I talk to her every single day, about everything and nothing. She's very wise... I trust her implicitly, and Oprah knows I would never betray her. She's been betrayed so many times."
People have definitely twisted their close friendship into something else, prompting the best friends to address the rumors that they're lesbians several times. King wants to make it clear: She no longer feels those particular rumors are her problem.
"In the beginning, it used to bother me," she says. "Like, 'Oh, my God, I don't want people to think I'm gay -- I'm trying to get a date!' But now I don't care. I've given up trying to figure that out. At this stage, if you still think that, it's on you."
And how does King feel about it being Winfrey's final season on daytime TV? Oprah seems to be taking it better than her best friend.
"I'm having a harder time than she is," King says. "She's literally doing the hula. I think there's gonna be a deep hole in afternoon TV -- I'm not even sure people realize."
