Box Office: Russell Brand claims top 2 spots with 'Hop,' 'Arthur'
This weekend's Box Office results were generally disappointing across the board. Even Russell Brand's live-action comedy with Helen Mirren (twitpic'ed above) "Arthur," which came in at No. 2 (just behind his animated/live-action flick "Hop") debuted to lower-than-expected numbers. It appears that movie-goers prefer to hear Brand's voice than see him in the flesh, as "Hop," in which he voices an Easter bunny, held onto the top spot. "Arthur's" first week in the box office earned it a mediocre at best $12.6 million.
Meanwhile, "Hanna" came in at No. 3 with just $12.3 million while the epic assassin adventure flick was expected to do better. "Soul Surfer" and "Your Highness" also opened new this weekend, but buzz failed to translate into dollars for those films, too.
The entirety of the Top 10 for the weekend is below. Did you hit the theater? What did you see?
1. Hop ... $ 21.7 million
2. Arthur ............... $ 12.6 million
3. Hanna ................ $ 12.3 million
4. Soul Surfer .......... $ 11.1 million
5. Insidious ............ $ 9.7 million
6. Your Highness ........ $ 9.5 million
7. Source Code .......... $ 9.1 million
8. Limitless .............$ 5.7 million
9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules . $ 4.9 million
10. The Lincoln Lawyer ... $ 4.6 million

I wonder did he plan it so that he had two movies opening one week after the other? Russell Brand, that is. curious
u honestly think he had that done? seriously! studios do that!!
Brand is creepy and ugly, I didn't think he could be the pull off "Arthur".
Dudley Moore is spinning in his grave. The "At The Movies" critics found this version of "Arthur" better than Dudley Moore's version.
"Arthur" is "a play on the midevel story"?!?! What in the world? Where do they hire these hack writers anyway? This isn't King Arthur, it's a remake of Dudley Moore's movie, nitwit!
Yeah, you're thinking of "The Tempest" which also starred Brand and Mirren.
Don't get your panties in a twist, Cornelius. Life will go on. I think you made a mistake once, too, no?
The fact that Russell Brand is the voice in HOP has absolutely NOTHING to do with it's appeal - it's the animation. Hannibel Lecter could have been the voice and it would have been a hit. The DISMAL opening of Arthur is a more accurate reflection of America's disdain for the no talent hack Brand.
@Alex - He couldn't pull off Arthur, hence the disasterous opening weekend......
I think it was quite obvious Hannah was not going to do well. I mean, really??? C'mon kids, it looks awful!
I went and saw Arthur on Friday. While I'm not really a fan of Brand's normal silly movies, I really liked this one. It wasn't raunchy like some of his stuff and actually told a great story with a good moral. My husband and I were both very entertained. Award-winning: No. Entertaining: Yes.
