Why Mark Wahlberg should scrap plans for a 'Fighter' sequel

melissa-leo-christian-bale-mark-wahlberg-amy-adams-fighter.jpgIn a recent interview in Entertainment Weekly, Mark Wahlberg let drop that he's "in the early stages" of planning a sequel to his Academy Award-winning movie "The Fighter."

"Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can't imagine they wouldn't want to go back," said Wahlberg in the interview. "But it's still kind in the early stages."

But because there has only ever been one sequel in the history of filmdom that has lived up to (even exceeded) it's predecessor ("The Empire Strikes Back"), we are here to make the case to Mark Wahlberg to reconsider and just move on to another project.

So, without further ado, five reasons why "The Fighter" should not be sequelized:

1. An old adage: Leave well enough alone.

2. "Rocky II" through "Rocky VI." It's the principal of diminishing returns. How long would it be until the franchise devolves into Micky Ward fighting Dolph Lundgren and Mr. T?

3. How many times can Christian Bale drop his weight down to that of a Chihuahua before he starts losing teeth, hair and his mind?

4. We all watched Melissa Leo's F-bomb-spiked Oscar acceptance speech and her cringe-worthy personal "For Your Consideration" campaign. We're just a little bit worried about her ability to handle any additional accolades, no matter how deserved. Although, a stinky sequel could work in her favor by neutralizing a little of her crazy. Hmm.

5. Honestly, we'd rather see a big screen treatment of "Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals":

Only one?!?!?! Three words: Godfather. Part. Two.

Come on, people!

IA...Why in the world did you leave out Godfather Part 2?

Does it really make since to compare a true story movie with a fiction movie? No it doesn't. After watching The Fighter I came away a little disappointed that it was over without showing the Gatti fights.

what about Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, The Bourne Series?

The Dark Knight is probably the best sequel in history. GFPt.2 was amazing. Am I the only person who didn't think the empire strikes back was brilliant. I mean I liked it, but not as much as star wars.

Well, I wouldnt say that about The Dark Knight (its one of my fav) but, considering Godfather pt2, The Lord of the Rings and the Bourne series, it wont come close to them...

regarding Empire Strikes Back, I couldnt agree with you more!

Also...Toy Story 2 and 3 were as good if not better than the original!! 3rd one was nominated for BEST Picture!

What an idiotic thing to say that only ONE sequel in the history of filmdom has ever lived up to its predecessor. Do you even watch movies?!

Terminator 2.

And Toy Story 3 had the benefit of there being 10 Best Picture nominees.

And on other note, enough about Leo and her speech and her ad. I'd love to see any of us better handle sudden accolades.

The first Rocky movie was the worst of the six movies.

Anon, no. The Dark Knight was good, but not even in the top 20 best sequels.
