Mel Gibson misses 'Beaver' premiere; turns himself in on battery charges

gibson-mug.jpgOn Wednesday, Mel Gibson turned himself in to the LAPD on battery charges (last week, he pleaded no contest to the charges that he struck ex Oksana Grigorieva). Accompanied by his lawyer, Gibson rolled into the El Segundo Police Department around 9:30 p.m. PT, according to TMZ, where he posed for a new mug shot (above) and had his fingerprints taken.

According to one cop on hand, Gibson was "very pleasant."

"This is just an old case that the judge wanted him to get fingerprinted for," Sgt. Dean Howard told the Hollywood Reporter. "It isn't anything new. We did it real quick and he was out."

Sadly, Gibson was unable to attend the premiere of his new movie, "The Beaver," at SXSW the same night.

"I just have to ask everybody, can you see a film and appreciate the artist for his work?" director and co-star Jodie Foster asked before the movie. "And if anything, I think anybody who comes to see the film and understands Mel's extraordinary performance in the movie can't go away untouched by his humanity."

The movie debuted to surprisingly positive fan reviews.

"It was really beautiful," filmgoer Lainey Melnick told the LA Times. "I could put all [my negative feelings about Gibson] aside and was watching the story."

Charlie Sheen should have his agent get him a similar role in The Beaver 2. That would be winning.
