Jimmy Fallon on 'Ellen' about 'Tonight Show': 'I'd love to do it whenever Jay's ready'

jimmy-fallon-ellen-degeneres.jpgLate night host and comedian Jimmy Fallon has taped an upcoming appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," where he talks with host Ellen DeGeneres about the possibility of hosting "The Tonight Show" in the future.

Ellen: "With everything that went on with Jay and with Conan, do you think about that, if that ever got offered to you? To me, that's a scary situation after what happened with Jay and Conan but if they offered that to you, would you go into that time slot?"

Jimmy: "I'm the third person because Letterman did this time slot and then he went to CBS. Then Conan did this time slot and he's at TBS. So I think if there's a lesson to be learned, if you do this, you're guaranteed not to host 'The Tonight Show.' [laughs] Of course I'd love to do it whenever Jay's ready, if Jay wants to retire. I love being at 12:30. It's a comforting time slot because it's so late at night. I think I'm on at like 12:37 at night which [targets] college kids and convicts. And my parents. They're the only people watching so I'm very comfortable with it. I'm just really having fun and I'm learning what I'm doing."

Ellen: "Well, you just get better and better. I've always adored you from Saturday Night live. I think you're hilarious."

The entire Jimmy Fallon interview will air Monday, March 21. What do you think? Would Jimmy be a good "Tonight Show" host?

i would watch fallon on the tonight show as much as i watch leno, which is never - i'm a letterman/ferguson man

I think Jimmy Fallon would be a much better choice to replace Jay Leno then Conan ever was. I love the way Jimmy has really come into his own over the last year and is for me the best late night show on tv now. When Jay is ready to retire on his own without being forced out by NBC and frankly Conan and his ultimatums to NBC to stay on then YES. Give it to Jimmy.

As long as it isn't some rescheduling boondoggle like NBC did with moving Jay to 10:00 and Conan to 11:30 and then they trying to undo it. When Jay is really ready to step down, Jimmy would be great.

We just have to be sure Jimmy brings the Roots with him.

I can't see Jimmy Fallon ever hosting The Tonight Show.

Leno will never retire. He's leaving that studio feet first.
I assume Jimmy isn't naive enough to fall for a "Jay's retiring" trick and end up like Conan.
