Eva Braun's private photos released by Life

A collection of photographs has been found that belonged to Eva Braun, the longtime mistress and (for one day as they scrambled into the infamous bunker) wife of German dictator Adolf Hitler. This collection of rare and previously unseen photos comes from a cache of images confiscated by the U.S. Army in 1945 and brought to light by collector and curator Reinhard Schulz for Life magazine.

The photos depict her casually drinking tea around the grounds, commanding a row boat and posing in a swimsuit. It is a fascinating look at a woman most famous for committing suicide at the age of 33 via cyanide capsule alongside Hitler in a bunker when the Third Reich was falling.

Hitler disapproved of some of Braun's habits such as smoking, wearing makeup, skinny dipping, and nude sunbathing. Here, Braun, in a bathing suit, relaxes by Konigssee lake in 1940.
