1.8 microseconds: The amount of time per day you're never getting back

globy-pee-wee.jpgAs if Daylight Savings and Rebecca Black weren't enough... it now looks as though we'll lose 1.8 microseconds every day for the duration of our respective mortal coils.

According to Space.com, the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan was so big, it altered the earth's rotation. NASA geophysicist Richard Gross says the tremor accelerated the earth's spin, shortening its 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds. And that seems like a permanent thing.

Space.com says the scenario is "similar to that of a figure skater drawing her arms inward during a spin to turn faster on the ice" -- which doesn't help us understand it at all. But at least know we know that the earth is a lady.

You do realize it's called MOTHER Earth, right?

Also, we're not losing that much. There are 86,400 seconds in a day. That's 86,400,000,000 per day. We're losing 1.8 of those a day. 655.2 a year. 52,416 over the course of eighty years. That's barely 0.05 seconds (0.052416) over the course of eighty years. About 52.4 seconds (52.41600) over a millennium. Not that big of a deal.

What an interesting discovery!

Although an interesting statistic, the fact is this happens all the time with strong earthquakes. It's just our ability to measure all this has become better. Same with the whole idea of the earth's axis being tilted. If you think it happened with Japan last week you can bet it happened with San Francisco in 1906, too.

I just timed the day with my Timex stopwatch.. The actual number is .7 Microseconds.. looks like we will be ok after all.

For those who don't understand: when the earthquake happended the earth got slightly denser; like pulling your arms in.

1.8us....Who cares! Thats so fast that it isn't even noticeable!

Wow, now I am scared, and to think, I thought things were going to be ok, with Obamnation's ObamaKare and Pressing 1 for Inglish and Made in the U.S.A., no wait, thats right, we are in deep dodo cause of the Japanese, there is a global issue, and it a'int the 28.999% for the Visa I have and the Undocumented Alien Invasions from the South dont have (Visa, they dont have a Visa, get it, the illegals, never mind, back to pee, wee, zes, wee, wee), Buy Dell, by American, no thats wrong alos, well, maybe the almost 2 mila whatever it is misssing is an issue, and unclean on at that, right, no? forget it, Al Gore for Pres. no that i Leslie Gore, the singer, is that her daddy? I love how chaotic and free it is. People, trolleys, horse-buggies, automobiles, and bicycles all going whereever they want with no traffic controls, and doing a reasonable job of staying out of each other's path. Now a QUAKE~!
