Wear Red Day 2011: 'Go red for women,' say Betty White, Jennie Garth and more

Friday, Feb. 4 is national Wear Red Day, which is an awareness day to get the word out about heart disease and the fight against it. People are encouraged by the promotion to wear red, tell the women in their lives about the dangers of heart disease and to donate to the American Heart Association at the Wear Red site.

You don't just have to straight-up donate, either. There are lots of things you can purchase on Shop Heart.org, with the money going towards the foundation and research. We particularly like the charm bracelet and the red leather journal.

The story behind of the red dress/color is this:

In 2003, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the American Heart Association and other organizations committed to women's health joined together to raise awareness of women and heart disease. The NHLBI introduced the red dress as a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness and the American Heart Association adopted this symbol to create synergy among all organizations committed to fighting this cause.

Heart disease has long been thought of as solely a man's problem, but that is not the case. It's the no. 1 killer of women in the United States. So tell a woman you love today about to take the Go Red for Women Heart Check-up today.

This is very important to everyone that has a woman in there life, I think the reason women have more heart attacks is because they have the biggest hearts and carry the biggest burdens. This red day is also being shared with Veterans support
to be clothed in red on fridays in support of our troops.

This is a great cause and a wonderful way to bring attention to it. I wish this article had been posted yesterday. At 0950 ET, I am already at work and not able to participate. :-(

OH. So now heart disease is IMPORTANT since WOMEN are dying of it. When it was just a man's disease it was no big deal! Same thing with cancer. The media and the Hollywood idocracy just screams about ****** cancer, but not a peep about testicular or prostrate cancer. Why would THOSE be important? Only men die from them.

Hey Randal, lying face down can give you cancer?

What happened to Wear Red on Friday for the blood of our soldiers? You should choose another color.

I understand Randall and Bonnie's concerns. But I don't think any cause should be undermined. Randall, if you feel prostate and testicular cancer need more attention, please do it! I support all cancer awareness. It's very upsetting to see comments like this and no one REALLY doing anything about it. )= I hope to see a day of honor for all cancers. Bonnie, why can't we share colors? People do not have to stop participating in wearing red on Friday's for soldiers. They can wear it for both, or just one. It's up to each person to decide what they support. I can't believe the negative energy! Wow. Really, Wow.

Why is there emphasis on a form of cancer associated with women and not cancer in general? Why is there emphasis on female heart disease and no heart disease in general? Is it more tragic for a woman to die than for a man to die? When will we be freed from sterotypes, a victim mentality and angry self-promoting hearts to seeing everyone is equal and of equal value regardless of gender, age, race, etc.?

The emphasis of women specific diseases arises from feminism. The feminist ideal of "us against the men" is a worse heart disease than actual heart disease. The quality of "who we are" is diminished with that mentality. How is it different than the Arabs against the Jews or the race wars in Rwanda? At heart, its the same principle, to divide because we are the "victim" instead of coming together because we are all equal. It's better to live for a shorter time with better ideals than to live a long time as a lesser person.

Jesus Christ! Can NO ONE be supportive? February is actually National Heart Health Month. For EVERYONE. National wear red day is something that has come of it. If YOU are so upset about not having a day for men, women and children, why don't you start one? And looking at the facts, there are MANY days for all. Why does ANY cause need to be brought down? Have you heard the new campaign to get men checked up? Real men get check ups. I think it's great, I don't think that's prejudice. For all those complaining, YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO START YOUR OWN CAMPAIGN INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BRING DOWN OTHER GOOD CAUSES. Stop complaining and do something about it.

How about leaving the blessed name of Jesus out of your rant?
After all, He is the heart of it all!!!!
