Oscars 2011: James Franco says Ricky Gervais 'bombed' Golden Globes
Ricky Gervais may not be hosting the Oscars, but he's finding a way to round up some controversy this weekend anyway. The Golden Globes host threw in his two cents, drafting a sample opener for co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco to try out for Sunday's show (Feb. 27). A move Franco for one, is not impressed with.
"He did his award show and he bombed," Franco tells E!'s Jason Kennedy. "Why is he trying to get in on ours?"
Publicity, James. Why else?
"Horrible," Franco continues. "His lines weren't good on the Golden Globes. Why does he want to do our lines?"
Even if they did opt to use a few of his jokes, Gervais himself tells The Hollywood Reporter that he wouldn't know.
"I am forbidden to work on the Sabbath," the atheist comedian says. "I hope my contribution will be helpful to the organizers of The Academy. I won't know if they use any of my material or not, as I will be unable to watch the ceremony this Sunday."
Adding, "I pleaded with my Bishop 'But surely watching The Oscars counts as pleasure.'"
Viewers seem generally split on whether Gervais nailed or bombed his Golden Globes gig, but are these Oscars jabs too much? Is it time to cede the spotlight to the new hosts, or is all fair in award show season?

LOL, Franco and Hath are going to bomb. They are going to be the worst hosts ever. Rather have Pauly Shore or Carrot Top hosting, LOL
Umm... maybe you should wait until you finish your gig James Franco before going around saying other hosts bombed when really all they did was not kiss the room's behinds to full entertaining effect (for the home audience).
James Franco needs to check the facts, the Golden Globes got the highest ratings that stupid show has received in the past 10 years with Ricky hosting. How exactly did Gervais "bomb". Seems like James Franco's head is getting a little big with all the praise hes been getting lately. He needs to check himself.
Gervais was a disgusting & insulting mess at the globes.
And then even lied about being invited back for a 3rd time .
The producers were adamant when they said they did not invite him back and have no intention of doing so.
Gervais just seems desperate & pathetic now trying to get publicity off the Oscars.
A show he's not even invited to.
@BHM1304 He bombed not so much in the ratings, but in the reaction, since hosts aren't supposed to annoy or insult the guests, etc. At least that's the rule. Unless your name is Don Rickles in which case you get a free pass to say whatever you like and everyone still loves you!
In the case of Don Rickles, I don't understand why he gets a free pass in his comedy. He makes racist and sexist jokes, and just because he is old he gets a pass, BULL S#!T.
Justin, youre an idiot. Don Rickles makes those jokes because it is not in a hurtful way but a comedic way. You're just an uptight douchebag.
Gervais did not bomb nor lie about being invited back. OF COURSE he was invited back - people were actually talking about the Golden Globes for once, weren't they?
I like Franco, but I had no idea that he didn't have a sense of humour. Lighten up, buddy, I've lost a little respect for you.
As long as Franco and Hathaway keep it safe with tons of lame jokes, the Hollywood press will call them a success.
If Franco thinks Gervais bombed (he was great by the way!), I can only imagine the horror that this year's Oscar show is going to be.
Go back to college Franco
Ricky was hilarious at the Globes, suck it up people.
