Oprah Winfrey's school rocked over dead baby
Despite her efforts, even Oprah Winfrey's school in South Africa can't keep the reality of life for girls in that region from entering its gates. Currently, an investigation continues over the body of a dead baby discovered on Wednesday (Feb. 16) in a student's backpack.
CNN reports local police say a dead newborn was discovered in a 17-year-old student's backpack while the student was being treated for excessive bleeding at a hospital. It is believed that she gave birth to the baby on school grounds and handed the backpack to hospital workers herself.
The school has declined to comment, since a minor is involved. The student is currently undergoing questioning by local authorities and an autopsy is underway on the body to determine cause of death.
Oprah Winfrey opened up her school for girls in South Africa in 2007 to offer those students not only an education, but also a sanctuary from the daily challenges of abuse, rape, and prejudice girls experience in that part of the country. But, Winfrey soon found out that even she can't protect the students from reality. Soon after its opening, she fired a headmistress for physically and sexually abusing pupils. The talk show host flew out to the school to personally apologize to the girls and share her own story of sexual abuse.
