Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way': Madonna's 'Express Yourself' meets Kylie Minogue?

kylie-minogue-lady-gaga-singles.jpgThe internet has been abuzz Friday (Feb. 11) regarding Lady Gaga's new single "Born This Way." The similarities to Madonna's 1989 single "Express Yourself" are hard to ignore. In fact, several creative YouTubers have put together mash-ups comparing the two songs (one of which is featured below).

In addition to "Express Yourself," we felt there shades of "Ray of Light" and "Vogue." This great Yahoo article dissects the piece even further.

There has also been some mention made of how much the single cover art looks so similar to Kylie Minogue's cover art for her 2007 hit "2 Hearts," which we can also see.

But really, is it that big of a deal? "Born This Way" isn't our favorite Lady Gaga number, but that has more to do with the fact that it sounds dated and not as lyrically interesting as, say, "Bad Romance" or "Alejandro."

Songs are going to sound the same -- there are only so many musical combinations/styles out there, plus "Express Yourself" is 20 years old. We think Gaga does a pretty good job of being original and maybe much of the ado being made about "Born This Way" is due to the quality of the piece. Maybe people wouldn't care as much about the Madonna sound if the song was better?

Also, maybe Lady Gaga chose to emulate some classic artists on purpose. Perhaps she is saying that she (and Madonna and Kylie) are born the way they are and that's great. "Born This Way" is a song about expressing yourself, after all, so what better song to make an homage to than "Express Yourself"?

What do you think, Pop2it readers?

Part of the chorus and beat of "Express Yourself" is sampled from the 1972 hit by the Staple Singers called "Respect Yourself". Where are all the Inspector Gadgets comparing these 2 songs?

EMBARASSING! What a rip-Off!

Kylie Minogue is the Princess of Pop...Love her!

Your excuse of it was done on purpose is BS, was it the same thing with Alejandro? When does it become her ripping off an artist?

Go Lady Gaga! I can appreciate the homage to Madonna, and who better to do it than the lead monster herself?

I like "Born this Way"! Catchy, classy, and inspirational!

Can we please stop grasping at straws? That mash-up is ridiculous. With the exception of a similar beat pattern, I fail to see any correlation. If Madonna doesn't care, then drop this "issue".

It is not my fave Gaga song, I appreciate the sentiment though that she has in it. I will have to defend her here.

I think this whole thing is drummed up because the song is boring so you (Zap) and other sites are trying to make a controversy where there is none. The song doesn't sound similar - Gaga's is faster with more treble and Madonna's was slower with deeper bass. There might be a musical cue or two that is similar but they are two completely different songs.

Sorry guys I just don't agree here.

Another Kylie fan. Not fond of Born this Way at all. Doesn't matter who she ripped off or didn't rip off. There are plenty of feel good songs out there by other good artists. Seek those out instead. And media, please stop having collective orgasms over this chick. She wouldn't get half the attention she gets if she didn't dress like a Claudia Kishi reject.

a total Rip Off from Madonna.
Not much to add...
very dissapointed :(

@turn_the_screw: the thing is that probably Madonna is laughing at gaga hard... she has obvious reasons... The ones that are pissed are Gaga Fans... (not the 14years old fanboys that like it ALL no matter what OMG AMZING) but the more mature fans she has. how can u like an artist that copy and copy and copy all the time? it´s a real turn off...specially when is an obvious ripp off as her new single!!!
