Chuck Tanner: Former MLB player and manager dies

chuck-tanner-gi.jpgChuck Tanner passed away on Friday (Feb. 11) at 82-years-old in his Pennsylvania home. He had reportedly been battling an illness for some time.

Tanner is most well known for managing the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 1979 World Series Championship. He began his baseball career playing for the Boston Braves in 1955, and continued on to play for the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels as well as the Braves (in Milwaukee, not Atlanta).

After eight seasons as a player, he moved on to managing the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A's, Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves. In 2007 he was named a special adviser to the Pirates' GM, Neil Huntington.
