Venus Williams' short dress at the Australian Open: Or is that just a long shirt?

Venus Williams cruised through her first-round match at the Australian Open on Monday (Jan. 17), beating Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2. But as we're writing about sports in a pop-culture blog, there must be something else to the story.And that, once again, would be the choice of on-court attire for the 29-year-old Williams. For her match against Errani, she wore a super-short tennis dress that barely reached the bottom of her shorts when she was standing still and rode up to her waist while she was on the move.
The small dress/long shirt, which Williams designed herself, has made headlines since its debut on Monday. But it's not like she was exposing herself on the court. She wore a pair of black shorts underneath, and decorum was maintained.
She did say, however, that she considered wearing a pair of nude shorts under the dress before switching to black, according to Yahoo Sports. We're guessing that really would have gotten people talking.

I am a #1 tennis fan but this is just vulgar, but both Williams sisters dress tacky anyway. They do need a dress code for them. I don't care who designs their clothing, if they want to make a statement, fine, but do it with dignity and class. And they have neither.

I have no personal opinion about this tennis player. I do not think that the long shirt meets the previous attire standards. It is not a dress. It is a long shirt and as a long shirt, must be continually pulled into place. If shirts and shorts are accepted in this sport, then she's dressed just fine. Not very attrctively, but fine enough to play tennis.
vulgar? g, you must be from the generation that believes women's dresses should be down to their ankles and they shouldn't be allowed to vote.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with the way either of the Williams sisters dress on or off the court. Those of you who criticize these 2 amazing athletes are only showing your ignorance and jealousy. Venus is wearing more on the court than most runners wear in their races, so give it a rest.
As for you Lt Bob, in case you haven't studied your science books well, we all come from primate life forms so get your head out of your *** and knock off with the crap.

Oh puleeezeee. You think people are watching women's tennis just for the tennis?? Ya gotta draw in new viewers somehow. Do you see what women wear playing beach volleyball? Even court volleyball? Have you seen the shorts get tinier and tinier in women's golf? Don't like it? Start a grassroots campaign and have supporters vote by not watching, or not using sponsor products. Hmmm, maybe we can get some of the men to bare more...

Swimmers wear bathing suits. Beach volleyballers (an Olympic sport) wear bikinis. Standard volleyballers and basketballers wear shorts. What's the big deal about a short skirt? I don't get why female tennis players just don't wear volleyball-style shorts or some variant anyway. Your average college volleyball player shows a lot more leg than tennis players do and no one seems to care.
