'True Grit' tops New Year's Eve box office
With no new movies opening wide on New Year's weekend, several holdovers from last week battled it out at the box office. "True Grit" came out on top.The Coen brothers western, which finished last week in second place, moved up to first place on Friday (Dec. 31) with an estimated $8.4 million in ticket sales. That's a significant improvement over the $4.8 million it made on Christmas Eve -- and also not unexpected, since New Year's Eve is typically a much bigger moviegoing night than Christmas Eve.
"True Grit" passed last weekend's winner, "Little Fockers," which made an estimated $7.8 million on Friday. It too was up over last Friday's take ($5.1 million).
In its third weekend, "Tron: Legacy" earned an additional $5.1 million Friday to take third place. "Yogi Bear" ($4.1 million) and "The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader" ($3.5 million) rounded out the top five.

It's so wonderful to see a high quality film like this find new life at the box office and actually increase its box office performance over the previous Friday. I loved this movie. I saw it with my parents last night in a nearly sold out theater. My dad was so enthralled he was unconsciously singing all the words to the theme music that played throughout the movie as we drove home. He was as precious as the movie. Rick, I think this could become one of the highest grossing films of the year and definitely the highest grossing western of all-time.
I didn't think "Little Fockers" awfull reviews and word of mouth would let it stay #1 another week.
Cal, are you a mole? What theme music? There certainly weren't any words to it. It's an original movie score... What's the matter with you?
