Ricky Gervais was 'totally unacceptable' as Golden Globes' host, says Hollywood Foreign Press
Sunday (Jan. 16) wasn't Ricky Gervais' first Golden Globes hosting gig, but it could be his last. The Brit previously joked about being invited back to host the awards show for the second time, saying "I can't believe they invited me back after the awful things I said. Let's see how far I can go this time."
While Gervais pushed the boundaries (per usual), he was also incredibly funny. He didn't say anything overly shocking or offensive, and aside from a snarky comment from Robert Downey Jr., seemed to be generally well-received.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association disagrees, however.
"He definitely crossed the line," HFPA president Philip Berk tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky."
He continues, "Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones."
Berk himself was the butt of one of the more surprising jokes of the evening, as Gervais introduced him by saying "I just had to help him off the toilet and pop his teeth in."
"I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was at the same time you heard it," Berk explains. "When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."
He has not yet commented on whether he will recommend Gervais to host again.
We thought the hosting was hysterical, but you can only pit Ricky Gervais against Hollywood so many times before it gets old. If this was his last shot, we're okay with that. Though, we really don't get why everyone is so shocked about his jokes. Seriously, what did everybody expect?

He was absolutely hysterical! There's no question about it, he was the best part of the show.
Let's be honest: if Gervais hadn't hosted last night, no one would be talking about the Golden Globes today.
And that is exactly why the HFPA is thrilled with him. Don't believe the fuss - the HFPA is probably going to give him a bonus for his work.
You want to know why this is all BS?
Because if Gervais had not hosted last night, NO ONE would be talking about the Golden Globes today.
And THAT is why the HFPA is thrilled with him. Don't believe the fuss - they have to be "mad" to stay in the good books of all the stars.
He was annoying. I didn't find him funny at all.
I thought he was great. I laughed so hard last night I was in crying. Ricky should be the host every year. I think the HFP should lighten up and realize that he has brought viewers back to the award show. Remember a few years ago when the show hit an all time low in the ratings.
Thought he was hilarious, but I doubt he'll be back. Gervais was the only reason I paid attention to the GG anyway. Hollywood needs an enema.
Disappointed you are obviously a very prudish person! Oh let me guess he made fun of one of your movie star Idols! Get over yourself just like every one in that room should have done. The man is very funny and he lets us normal folks see just how regular your movie star Idols really are and that's a great thing!!
Oh please get over it movie stars, HFPA..you can certainly being made fun of with all the money you make for "entertainment" and all the things you get away with ..have some humor please about yourself..Hollywood really need people like Gervais to remind them that world doesn't turn around them..and all their shenanigans are pathetically funny..ah and by the way Ricky is also FUNNY..hey without him NBC would not have the Office..(again a remake, granted a good one but still a remake..ah american are not very good in CREATIVITY and ORIGINALITY...lol)

He was freakin' hilarious...especially that last comment as the credits rolled...what about Robert Downey Jr.'s joke about the best actress category? Anyone catch that??
