Singer Melissa Etheridge will soon add Broadway star to her resume that already includes Grammys and an Academy Award. She's joining the Green Day-based musical "American Idiot" for one-week engagement... playing the role of the male lead.

Up until now, the role of "St. Jimmy" has been played by men -- including, most recently, Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong.

But in a statement released by show producers, director Michael Mayer explains the character isn't bound by gender. "Billie Joe and I always believed that it would be incredible to have a woman take on the role of St. Jimmy," Mayer says. "This character is seductive, thrilling and dangerous. Melissa Etheridge is all that and so much more. She's a rock icon and we couldn't be more thrilled that she's bringing her immense talent."

Should you want to catch one of Etheridge's select performances, she'll be at New York's St. James Theatre, Feb. 1 - 6.
