Jack Lalanne, the fitness expert who inspired generations of Americans to exercise, passed away Jan. 23 in his California home, at the robust age of 96.

The AP reports that Lalanne succumbed to respiratory failure from pneumonia at his Morro Bay home on the California coast. His agent, Rick Hersh, tells the outlet he exercised and ate healthy every day, up until the end.

His wife of 51 years, Elaine LaLanne, also issued a written statement on his passing. "I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon," she says, "but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for."

Frequently dubbed "the godfather of fitness," Lalanne urged audiences through television, motivational speaking and his health clubs long before working out became a national obsession.

He is survived by Elaine, his two sons (Dan and Jon) and a daughter, Yvonne.
