Wesley Snipes to begin three-year jail sentence
As previously reported by Zap2it, a request to appeal Wesley Snipes' 2008 conviction (for tax evasion) was denied. The "Blade" actor has been sentenced to three years in a Pennsylvania federal prison.
Well, the time has come to pay the piper. On Wednesday (Dec. 2) Snipes was ordered to voluntarily surrender to his sentence on Dec. 9, according to the AP.
The 48-year-old was convicted of three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file income tax returns from 1999 to 2001. During which time he was reported to have earned $38 million. Snipes attempted to remain free on bail while appealing said conviction (unsuccessfully) to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Snipes attorneys argued that his jury had been biased, and that the testimony of former celebrity financial advisor, Kenneth Starr, warranted a new trial. Following his testimony, Starr later admitted to cheating clients out of tens of millions of dollars.
The judge, however, is not buying it.
"The defendant Snipes had a fair trial; he has had a full, fair and thorough review of his conviction and sentence," the judge says. "The time has come for the judgment to be enforced."
