'The Beaver' trailer; Robert Downey, Jr. in musical comedy

Movie news nibbles begins with ...

The Jodie Foster-directed film starring Mel Gibson, "The Beaver" (above). Nope, it has nothing to do with Jerry Mathers, building dams or your dirty mind. Just watch the newly released trailer above to see what this woodland creature has to do with uplifting spirits. [Summit Entertainment]

Meanwhile, Iron Man himself Robert Downey, Jr. may be starring in an untitled musical comedy that Warner Bros. has just closed a deal on by the Tony-winning "Next to Normal" music and book team. The story will follow two Broadway songwriters who hit rock bottom in their careers and turn to teaching singing and dancing to a children's theater camp. [Deadline]

The International Documentary Association has named Lucy Walker's "Waste Land" as the best feature doc of 2010. Other awards went to ESPN's "30 for 30" for best continuing series, "Have You Heard from Johannesburg" for distinguished limited series. Roberto Hernandez and Geoffrey Smith's "Presumed Guilty" and Laura Poitras' "The Oath" tied for the IDA Humanitas Award. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Roman Polanski cleaned up with six wins at the European Film Awards for his "Ghost Writer," nabbing awards for Best European Film, best director, best actor (Ewan McGregor), screenplay, music and production design. Best actress went to Sylvie Testud for "Lourdes." [The Wrap]
