Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson split: 'Privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated'

Another one bites the dust.

After Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens and "Dexter" co-stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter called it quits on Monday (Dec. 13), another celebrity couple is splitting up: Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson are ending their two-year marriage.
 
They released a statement through their reps saying, "After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage.  We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

The couple, who tied the knot in September 2008, reportedly separated two weeks ago, reports Us Weekly. A source says, "They are being very civil about it." The source adds that Johansson initiated the breakup."The big problem with their relationship is the distance. They spent a lot of time apart when they are working. ... She's been unhappy for a while."

The notoriously private couple recently opened up about their relationship in the press. In the October issue of GQ, Reynolds said that marriage had "changed" him: "I'm a little more guarded, I think. I'm a little bit more wary of having my relationship turning into a soap opera. Last year, Johansson told Glamour magazine, "I don't profess to know anything about marriage that anybody else doesn't know, or how to make it right."

They say things come in threes, so with Reynolds and Johansson splitting, will that be the end of the celeb-relationship bloodshed? Or is there more to come?
