Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem's unborn child referred to as an 'anchor baby' by Fox News

penelope-javier-laugh.jpgFOX News regularly makes headlines with their headlines, and now they're at it again. The outlet ran a story on Dec. 10 with the title, "Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem Are Having an Anchor Baby."

Cruz recently told a television program in Spain that she and Bardem planned to have their baby in Los Angeles. FOX News has been admonished for using the term "anchor baby" before, with the Rocky Mountain News stating that the term is "derogatory, even racist, because it implies that Hispanics are having children as a way to stay in the U.S."

Considering Cruz and Bardem are A-list Hollywood movie stars with no signs of burning out any time soon -- and considering they're both legal U.S. residents -- we're pretty sure they don't need a pregnancy to stick around in Los Angeles.

Baby Cruz-Bardem will be eligible for dual citizenship if born in the U.S., as Spain will grant citizenship to a foreign-born baby if one of the child's parents were born in Spain.

Somos Republicans, a Latin conservative group, slammed Fox's use of the term in a statement.  "Fox News Latino is being insensitive and their actions are reprehensible. The term 'anchor baby' is equivalent to other defamatory terms such as 'wetback,' 'pickaninny' and 'tar baby.' Media outlets should never use these demeaning terms in connection with precious babies, and it is unfortunate that we have to inform FOX News of this when they are typically viewed as conservative."

What are your thoughts, Zappers? Did FOX step over the line? Should they issue an apology?

Yes, they should apologize...then shutter the whole ill-conceived, illegitimate "news" outfit.

Anchor baby doesn't seem relevant in this instance as they are both US residents.

But totally applicable for all the Mexicans who stream into this country like cockroaches and then give birth as illegal aliens.

The whole thing should be outlawed and all the roaches sent back to the roach motel

Fox News has no class, so I'm not surprised.

Sounds like Fox News to me- arrogant ********- Just when you think they can't get any more tasteless they manage!

I took to the search engine in Google en Espanol just for the fun of it and as of yet this controversy has not been reported in Espanol hmmn methinks They probably stuck in how to translate "anchor baby" heck I'm sure they have no idea what it actually means xD

Honestly I can't fathom the magnitude of this Sick joke. Seriously think about it, you're unborn child, your bundle of joy, refereed to a derogatory term, on the headline, not some measly little blog but, in a big News Network like FOX! like WOW! just Wow! seriously you have to step back and take deep breath cause it's making me really nauseous and red.

International affairs btw Spain & America are in good terms but methinks it probably ends here xD Put yourself in their Spanish boots of leather; We treat them like first class citizens and welcome their drunken celebs to our beautiful Ibiza yet they still compare us to low class Mexican scum even our Oscar National treasures! Hmmn this is not going to sit well with most Spaniards once they get a hold of this, translated it, and figure it out....

It´s unbelievable for me to see, how the United States which has always prided itself in being a land of freedom, respect to human rights and basic human goodness is turning into this hideous thing that is derogatory towards other races and other humans for that matter. Your country is made up of immigrants. How dare you get off insulting other PEOPLE like that? How dare you insult an unborn, innocent beautiful child with a derogatory term like that? Who do you people think you are? You actually consider yourself decent and good? Shame on you. Fox should be fined. I think they´re disgusting. The one thing that I´m actually sure of, is that Penelope and Javier WILL undoubtedly remain classy, and pay no heed to low-life statements like the one FOX gave, or like some of the shameful comments I just saw in this column.

why does everyone say that illegals are always from Mexico? They come from all over. The 9/11 terrorists from foreign citizens.

I thought "anchor" meant to "anchor" the marriage and to keep the marriage going.

Personally, I find the term to be shorthand for a non-derogatory event. First, it's not directed to the baby, but rather to the parents. Second, it's often accurate: Illegal aliens -- from any and all countries -- know that a U.S.-born child gives them leverage in remaining here. Cruz & Bardem are atypical, in that their financial means allow them to frequently -- and safely -- travel to their home countries, but the concept on an "anchor baby" is neither debatable nor uncommon.
