Paula Deen's 'heart is sad': Thieving housekeeper going to jail

paula-deen-gi.jpg
Poor Paula Deen. The Food Network star apparently hired a housekeeper that was moonlighting as a grade-A jewelry snatcher.

Mary Alice White has received 18 months of jail time, followed by six years of probation after pleading guilty to stealing jewelry from her former employers. The 47-year-old will also be required to repay $6,000 to Deen and her husband, Michael Groover, the Savannah Morning News reports.

"We thought of Mary like family," Groover told the judge. "We loved Mary."

Deen added, "The scars she left behind emotionally cannot begin to be measured. Our hearts are sad.

"Mary White is the most feared and destroying kind of thief you may ever run up against," Deen continued. "Mary was a master at making you think she cares about you. ... She used our love and kindness against us."

Though Groover says "Nobody but Mary knows everything she stole from us," the couple reported approximately $100,000 worth of men's and women's jewelry missing between Aug. 1, 2009 and May 1, 2010.

This was not White's first time before a judge, either. Her sticky fingers were charged as repeat offenders; she was previously convicted of theft by taking in December 1993. She was also arrested twice in May for attempting to pawn stolen items.

Two words: BACKGROUND CHECK C'mon Paula, you're smarter than that!

Paula, I love your shows. You have taught me things that even I didn't know & you always make me laugh. I too come from a long line of excellant country cooks. Very sorry to hear about the family's troubles with the housekeeper. Best of luck. Merry Christmas to you & yours.

What an idiot. If you're going to do something, at least make sure you don't get caught..

she maybe needs to clean her own house!

So sorry Paula about your troubles right here at the holidays. I hope you and your family have a blessed Christmas and that you can have some peace about this.

In this day and age, I am surprised Paula did not perform a background check. You just have to. I really thought in this article Paula was going to be upset with Smithfield Farms, who she represents, which has been in the news for extreme cruelty to animals. I hope she drops them.

hello can you spell background check?

If the Food network supplied Paula with this person it their
responsability to do a back round check on the person.

Nanny cam Paula, get one

Maybe she should pay her help a little better. And stop being so cheap..
